I dreaded the accounting on this one, but delaying it doesn’t make the expense go away. Bowdu’s last vet checkup was a heavy one, financial and psychological.

20140716 The Bows go to the vet

For Bowdu’s annual exam, I had an additional concern. Bowdu’s back legs — his back right leg, in particular — had been shaky for quite some time now. Last year, the vet said it indicative of muscle weakness, a symptom that often accompanies hypothyroidism. Bowdu’s energy levels remain consistent, so we maintained observational hover pattern.

Unfortunately, in the last couple months, his hind leg seems to have been giving him more trouble. The shaking, which was fairly sporadic in the past, is fairly constant now. One day a couple months ago, he started walking with a limp and keeping that back right foot raised. This wasn’t set off by any memorable trauma, and our routine has been fairly steady and low-impact, all around. He wasn’t expressing any audible pain, so I kept watch and waited it out. He returned to normal stride after a few days.

A few weeks ago, the same thing happened again. This time, however, he wasn’t so quick to bounce back. He is clearly not jumping as high as he used to. Getting up on the bed is a two-step process now, using his dog bed (placed on a cushion at the foot of the bed) to trampoline himself up to the human bed. He even allows me to lift him into the car — something that he usually makes an undignified stink about. On our off leash walks, he boycotts certain regular routes that we’ve hiked for years, and won’t follow closely. This is unusual, even for his Shibaness.

(Apologies for the vertical videography)

The second video, in particular, is Bowdu at his creakiest and slowest. [**Significant ETA: I just realized the second video is from the same day of his vet exam, which means his slow motion is actually a residual effect of the Acepromazine. The pace helps to show his funny gait though.] He is not a young dog anymore, but at nine years old, this is not what I would expect either. So we went off to the vet for as full a workup as we could manage without sedation (other than his acepromazine) …

  • Office Call: senior semi-annual exam, $56 $50.40
  • Total Body Function, $179 $161.10
  • Urinalysis add-on, $61 $54.90
  • Comfortis, 12 doses (20.1 ~ 40 pounds), $201.06
  • Referral credit, ($56.00)
  • TOTAL: $411.46*

* Prices reflect my 10% student discount, where applicable

The bloodwork came back just fine, and his thyroids continue to be well managed at his current dosage of 0.2mg of Soloxine, twice a day. The physical exam, however, was a shrieking, fur-flying, anal gland-releasing mess.

20140716 Black Dress + shedding dog + vet day

So much for his winning streak as a “good” patient. Bowdu was not having it this time. Suffice to say, I’m now looking forward to another estimated $500 examination, which will include sedation and X-rays, to get Bowdu’s back end issues properly diagnosed.

Based on Bowdu’s history and what I know of other Shibas with similar health profiles, I strongly suspect it’s an ACL injury. I don’t want to say much more without an official diagnosis. In the meantime, he’s been getting loaded up on liquid glucosamine supplements (which I’d stopped for a while, and more on that some other day) and he continues to get daily fish oil capsules. His weight is good, so there’s no change to his diet. We continue our regular walks, including our off leash hikes along less strenuous trails, which I think gives him the freedom to move at his own pace and comfort.

I have to trust that he knows his own body as intimately as nature allows. He won’t tax or purposely hurt himself. It’s only been a couple weeks since his visit and about 10 days since I started loading him with glucosamine, but he’s been noticeably improved. His situation is far from dire, but it will need to be addressed.

And this, too, is when I feel the pressure of maintaining an aging dog on a student’s budget. Even if his situation is “just” remedied with steady glucosamine supplements, I think I’m looking at about an additional $200 a year on nutraceutical expenses — which I’m ready and able to do. What I do now will have an impact on Bowdu long beyond my current budget situation.

The vet also mentioned an injectible solution called Ichon which is more expensive, but reportedly, more effective. Absorption is one of the biggest variables across tablet, liquid, and now injectible forms of glucosamine, so I’m going to have to do some research to figure out a solution that works best for us.

Getting ahead of ourselves though, especially since there hasn’t been an official diagnosis. Apparently, the supplements — and time, of course — are making a difference, so this is what’s in our future. Clearly, we’ve passed a life stage threshold of some sort. While Bowdu may not be as active as he was even a mere year ago, there’s a lot of life in him yet. Learning how to make the most of it is an ongoing, mutual process.

Lotta life

20 October 2012

This is part of my ongoing effort to track our pet finances here at the House of Two Bows. Previous posts in the series can be found under the category of finances.

The Cost of (Pet) Things for December 2012:

  • Food: $59
  • Treats: $17
  • Grooming: $0
  • Accessories and misc: $0
  • Vet & Medical: $0
  • TOTAL: $76 (running average for 2012 ~ $157 / month)

Food was pretty simple last month. Stocked up on a bunch of chicken sales, and I went with a 4 pound box of Honest Kitchen Force, the grain-free chicken recipe, when our previous box of Embark was used up. Looking over my numbers, it appears that each $40 box lasts us about two months for two 20 ~ 30 pound dogs whose daily meals are intermixed with all sorts of other items. They also go through about 64 ounces of yogurt a month.

With food in abundance, I was not compelled to buy the Bows any special treats for the holidays. That’s right, the pets got NOTHING for Christmas — not from us, anyway. I did pick up a 6-pack of pig’s ears as part of their regularly scheduled pampering, and RJ dehydrated more chicken hearts as well.

No money was spent in any of the remaining categories. Meanwhile, I know in 2013 we’re going to start out on top in the Accessories category because the Bows were given a very generous gift certificate to 2 Hounds Design, whose collars I’ve admired for a long time! I haven’t decided how we’re going to use the funds yet, especially since there are so many gorgeous specialty designs to choose from. Of course the Bows will show off their new duds when I finally decide.

Overall, we spent significantly less in 2012 (approx. $157 per month for both dogs) compared to 2011 (~$247 per month), and I’ll consider why when I review the annual dog budget in a separate post. Finances and other circumstances are changing a bit in 2013, so I’m not sure if I can keep up this regular feature through the next year. Nevertheless, I’ve found it an incredibly useful exercise for my own purposes, even if I’m not blogging every step of the way.

23 November 2012

This is part of my ongoing effort to track our pet finances here at the House of Two Bows. Previous posts in the series can be found under the category of finances.

The Cost of (Pet) Things for November 2012:

  • Food: $51
  • Treats: $10
  • Grooming: $0
  • Accessories and misc: $13
  • Vet & Medical: $0
  • TOTAL: $74 (running average for 2012 ~ $164 / month)

For food, I found lamb kidneys, and some good-looking liver from what appeared to be a very healthy pig! Confession: they came from a local hoity-toity butcher shop that I honestly have no business patronizing given my income. Further proof that I’m a Crazy Dog Lady: my dogs’ offal costs more per pound than most of the meat that I consume (sparingly, these days).

3 November 2012 Lamb kidney!

There was other stuff too, like two bags of Fromm kibble at BOGO Black Friday price, two packs of perfectly bite-sized turkey tails, and other meats. No, I didn’t spend $50 just on organs for the dogs this month!

Meanwhile, RJ’s efforts to make our own dog treats does seem to be paying off. Another round of chicken hearts were dehydrated and lasted the whole month, along with a small purchase of pork skin treats from the above-named butcher, and tendon chews at another place.

And for the third (and probably final) time this year, poop bags were purchased. I’ve always hated the idea of spending money on something that I’m literally throwing away… but this is one of those accessories that distinguishes modern pets as an economically vital and thus socially essential category. Considered in this light, paying for poop bags feels like a kind of civic duty to assert the relevance of dogs — yup, dogs do indeed count for shit!

So, I’m not entirely “back” yet. Things didn’t go exactly as hoped last month… Despite everyone’s words of encouragement (much appreciated!), I half saw this coming. Nevertheless, I’m still working on Plan A, version 2.

What can proceed according to plan are the fabulous giveaways lined up for the month, starting with the next post. Hint: we’ll be featuring a food brand that the Bows are very familiar with and amply approve. Stay tuned.

25 October 2012 What lies ahead

This is part of my ongoing effort to track our pet finances here at the House of Two Bows. Previous posts in the series can be found under the category of finances.

The Cost of (Pet) Things for October 2012:

  • Food: $84
  • Treats: $9
  • Grooming: $0
  • Accessories and misc: $0
  • Vet & Medical: $255
  • TOTAL: $348 (running average for 2012 ~ $173 / month)

In food news, we’re trying out a new kibble this month called Zignature, manufactured by Pets Global, Inc. A local pet store was running a promotion to drum up interest, selling 4 pound bags that would normally retail for $9.99 for only $4.99. We’re almost done with our first trial of the Trout and Salmon Meal Formula, and have another bag of the Turkey formula coming up just in time for November. It’s going okay so far, but I’ll post my thoughts later.

Also picked up a bunch of meat and supplements, including a large container of JointMAX liquid Glucosamine at a pretty reasonable price after redeeming a Groupon for EntirelyPets.com.

Topping off the Groupon deal ($30 worth of products for $15), I threw in a couple pouches of Fruitables treats. Meanwhile, RJ is suddenly on board with dehydrating our own treats more regularly, so he took the initiative to shrink down a big ol’ bag of chicken hearts, which the Bows are loving. This makes me happy, as I’ve not had the energy to keep up with treat-making projects to make the dehydrator purchased in May 2012 pay for itself yet.

The biggest hit to this month’s finances — and knocking the monthly average back up, dammit — was vet bills, obviously. I can’t do anything about this until I move to a less expensive part of the country/world. Ugh. We’ve gotten away with no major veterinary expenses for Bowpi this year (knock on wood), but I’d like to do a full blood panel at her next annual exam (she had a limited panel done in February 2011), so I’ll expect another figure like this in a few more months.

20 September 2012

This is part of my ongoing effort to track our pet finances here at the House of Two Bows. Previous posts in the series can be found under the category of finances.

The Cost of (Pet) Things for September 2012:

  • Food: $49
  • Treats: $30
  • Grooming: $7
  • Accessories and misc: $45
  • Vet & Medical: $20
  • TOTAL: $151 (running average for 2012 ~ $153 / month)

This is apparently the month of “green” food, including a variety of supplements. We got a lot of mileage out of our sample pouch of The Honest Kitchen’s Perfect Form, an herbal and plant-based digestive supplement, so I bought a full canister to keep on hand — not for everyday use. After last month’s half-successful trial with green tripe (Bowdu loved his share; Bowpi barfed up her entire portion), I went ahead and picked up two more chubs. While browsing at the local holistic pet store, this item called Green Mush™ caught my eye, so I grabbed a small sample bottle.

I liked it better when I hadn’t taken a look at the company website. I’m sufficiently scared by what I read from HealthForce™ that I’ll be giving them the rest of the bottle in ratios much lower than suggested, lest the Bows start beaming involuntary telepathic messages to Mayan DemonWarriorSpirits™ to come invade our home and do their Manna-thing all over us…

Green Mush added to HK Preference
1 tsp Green Mush added to 1/4 cup of Honest Kitchen Preference… it’s practically glowing

Lesson learned: take heed of the CRAZY MYSTICAL SYMBOL™ on packaging before purchase. Luckily this stuff was not very expensive.

Moving along in this month’s showcase of The Overindulgent Pet Mommy to the treats and non-essential edibles category, the Bows got some more C.E.T. dental chews and a bag of really expensive dehydrated goat liver treats. I was enjoying a fleeting sense of optimism and in a mood to buy something shiny when I picked up that $15 pouch (about $13 after my store rewards discount). Though the Bows expressed their gratitude with appropriate enthusiasm, I felt like such a sucker by the following day that I bought a couple pig’s hearts to chop up and throw into the dehydrator. MY homemade treats will cost barely a fraction of what I paid for that pack of goat liver, dammit.

Grooming costs amounted to a single tube of pet toothpaste.

Accessories and miscellaneous costs included a Thundershirt, as mentioned (yet to be put to the test), and the toll across the Bay bridge to take the Bows to the beachside Shiba meetup. The parks themselves may be free, but travel still accounts for some expense — I’ve given up on counting gas money!

Finally, I had to reschedule Bowdu’s anticipated vet appointment for early October… so this month’s medical expense is merely for a refill of his Soloxine. That’s how much I paid 1-800-Petmeds for a 250-count refill of 0.4 mg pills (his entire daily dosage), minus a $5 loyalty credit. Thank goodness hypothyroidism is a relatively inexpensive and easily manageable condition… at least for Bowdu, for now!

The Cost of (Pet) Things for August 2012:

  • Food: $69
  • Treats: $0
  • Accessories and misc: $22
  • Vet & Medical: $79
  • TOTAL: $170 (running average for 2012 ~ $153 / month)

Food purchased included many pounds of MEAT, MEAT, MEAT. There were some deals at local grocery stores that were just too good to pass up, so now the freezer is fully stocked. I went to pick up a box of Honest Kitchen Preference to accompany the meat (with a 20% off coupon at my local petstore, so I paid $26.39 for the 3 lb box, which is going to last about 6 months if the last box was any indication). While there, I decided to snag a few cans of chicken-based Weruva.

20 August 2012 Weruva Funky Chunky Chicken Soup

I’ve never considered regularly feeding the dogs canned food primarily due to price and quality. But last month’s Pawalla haul convinced us that this brand is worth keeping on hand. This purchase also violates our typical rule of no processed chicken, but canned food is processed quite differently from kibble, and this probably won’t be a regular thing.

Pawalla, Salmon Ears, and PetsLoveToys (review forthcoming) kept us well supplied with treats, too. Honestly, I don’t blog for the schwag. And since it’s taken about two years of persistent effort for me to notice that blogging has contributed to zeroing out one pet finance category for one month, I definitely wouldn’t recommend doing this for the money!

As a grad student, I’ve gotten used to graciously accepting any kind of support. Just don’t tell my department that I’m willing to write for dog food.

In accessories, Bowdu’s replacement paracord leash arrived! Tony, who makes these leashes by hand, added an ingenious and simple modification so I’ll be able to clip the leash to my body and avoid a similar mishap like last time. Also got more supplies for packing up raw meals.

Finally, vet costs consisted of six more doses of Comfortis. The price I listed includes the company’s $10 rebate.

24 June 2012

The Cost of (Pet) Things for July 2012:

  • Food: $111
  • Treats: $20
  • Accessories and misc: $22
  • Vet & Medical: $19
  • TOTAL: $163 (running average for 2012 ~ $151 / month)

Spent a lot on food and treats because it was apparently the month for deals. Got a free bag of Fromm’s with a regular price purchase, and Honest Kitchen was buy-one-get-one-half-off at the local chain. Suffice to say, we’re well supplied for a long while.

Meanwhile, Bowdu’s ID tag fell off sometime this month in some freak mishap. I have no idea what happened to it — I never heard it clink on the ground, he didn’t get snagged on anything as far I know, and his rabies tag is still attached to his collar, so who knows where it went. Anyway, he needed an immediate replacement. Also under accessories and miscellany is another pack of poop bags.

In vet fees, Bowpi got her three-year DHPP booster at the weekend clinic. It would have been about twice as much at our regular vet.

This is part of my ongoing effort to track our pet finances here at the House of Two Bows. Previous posts in the series can be found under the category of finances.

16 June 2012

The Cost of (Pet) Things for June 2012:

  • Food: $34
  • Treats: $0
  • Grooming: $0
  • Accessories and misc: $11
  • Vet & Medical: $237 $0
  • TOTAL: $45 (running average for 2012 ~ $149 / month)

At least something was easy this month — the area of pet finances. I’ve gotta admit that the Dog Budget iPhone app I installed last month really does the trick! It’s quite efficient for visualizing expenditures in appropriate categories, and having an instant total on hand really makes me keenly aware of my spending.

All food this month was in the form of raw and fresh food. Stocked up on sale turkey necks ($1.69 / pound), chicken drumsticks ($0.99 / pound), etc.

Other sale items included two 4′ leashes at $5 apiece, which I filed under accessories. They’re staying in the car as part of my dog emergency kit, just in case I need a backup when out traveling with the Bows, or if I come across a stray dog…

Extra dog leashes

The vet fees come from an incident at the busy dog park last Saturday, when someone else’s dog bit Bowpi. Unfortunately, I did have to spend a few hours with her in the pet emergency ward on a Saturday afternoon, but she is all right. It took a day of sulking for her to return to her usual Peepsy self. I debated whether I should blog about it. Since this incident slightly modifies how I will be utilizing dog parks, and I’ll probably refer to it in the future, I may as well mention it.

Ultimately, there is no need to fuss or fume, and for this I think we are fortunate. Anyway, since I’m expecting a full reimbursement, I’m striking that cost from the list.

Cost of (Pet) Things: February 2012

  • Food: $94
  • Treats: $39
  • Accessories and misc: $0
  • Grooming: $0
  • Vet & medical: $84
  • TOTAL: $217 (running average for 2 months, $175.50 / month)

Aurgh. How did we end up spending so much this month, especially on edibles?

Well for starters, in the Food & Treats categories, I got a 180g container of PlaqueOff on Amazon for $43. Three times the amount of our usual 60g containers, which cost around $22 ~ $25 at local stores. Times like this, I feel no qualms about turning to online discounts.

We should have saved a bit this month, thanks to a sponsored review from Mr. Chewy. I guess we’ll feel the savings in subsequent months as we work through all our edibles. Also filed under treats are two packs of C.E.T. Dental Chews we got at a good price in celebration of National Pet Dental Month. These are the only beefhide products we feed here at the House of Two Bows.

As for Vet & medical costs, Bowpi went in for a checkup at a new vet for a mole/wart thing that’s been growing on her front leg. It didn’t seem to alarm the vet and he didn’t push any tests. He told us some of our options if we did want to get it more thoroughly checked out; in the meantime, we’re keeping an eye on it. So for the first time ever, we left our vet appointment with a double-digit vet bill, a “mere” $68 for the consultation.

Meanwhile, Bowdu needed a refill of Soloxine, and we’re doing something slightly different this time.

Soloxine 0.2mg vs. 0.4 mg

Instead of getting one 0.2mg pink tablet twice a day, he’s getting half a 0.4mg purple tablet twice a day. Based on the price list at Drs. Foster & Smith, our regular way would have been 12 cents a day for medication. This way, we’re paying 8 cents a day for medication.

Yes, it’s the difference of pennies. But considering that Bowdu will be on this thyroid medication for the rest of his life, every extra cent makes a different, doesn’t it?

Wrapping up 2011 budgeting project – and onward into 2012!

budgeting, cost of pets, finances

Relatively sized
24 January 2012

A funny person once proclaimed that I seem to have the fewest financial worries of anyone he knows, which is highly ironic considering that I’m currently a graduate student in the humanities at a public university, and I’ve been living off fellowships, stipends, GSI wages, and occasional guinea pigging gigs for over five years now. I certainly don’t give the impression of being rich based on my wardrobe, car, home, or other daily extravagances. But I do take pride in the condition of my dogs, and feel secure in the knowledge that I’ve got the necessary savings and/or line of credit that I can throw down if we are ever confronted with an emergency (knock on wood!!).

While budgeting alone is not a sufficient prophylactic against traumatic expenses, it is a surprisingly useful skill that really polarizes my peers; those in my age range either know how to do it conspicuously well, or they’re quietly struggling. In the absence of children, a full-time job, or a “real” house of my own, I fall somewhere inbetween. But I think we at the House of Two Bows are doing all right on behalf of our dogs, in part because there are two of us (with our own bank accounts) to cover all the pet expenses, and also because I do all the pet budgeting. Heh, heh, heh.

I had basically one financial strategy last year — to keep track of what I spent on the pets. Step one is to know what I spend and face the concrete reality of what is necessary, versus what is frivolous. After that, I can prioritize and make adjustments as necessary, or establish a benchmark for how much I should be able to stash away every month.

My primary tool was a pocket planner dedicated to this purpose, as I found it easiest and most accessible to jot things down in pen and ink whenever I made a pet-related purchase. Everything from the $2.49 tub of yogurt to the $200+ vet bill was written down within the day, lest I forget. Then at the end of the month, I sorted items into categories, and wrote those totals on sticky notes which I kept in the book. At minimum, I needed a four-month cycle to get a realistic sense of my average expenses, given the seasonality of vet visits and short-notice blowout sales.

I had established my expense categories beforehand, but I didn’t bother to file everything into appropriate categories until I did my end-of-the-month tally. During the month I would itemize my purchases in some detail (noting, for example, the price per pound of meat). In the end, I could group all of my purchases into the following categories:

  • Food
  • Treats
  • Vet & meds
  • Accessories & miscellaneous

Other categories that weren’t incorporated, but might be applicable:

  • Training and behavioral consultation
  • Pet insurance
  • Licensing and memberships (if your local dog park requires an annual fee, for example)
  • Grooming
  • Dog walking, boarding, and travel
  • Unreimbursed rescue and fostering expenses (which is now tax deductible with proper documentation!)
  • Puppyhood (for various reasons, first-year puppy expenses deserve a category of their own)

The categories you establish should be big yet clearly demarcated to help you recognize patterns in your spending habits. At the end of the year, this is what mine look like.

Monthly Averages of Pet Things for 2011:
Food costs: $84
Treats: $26
Accessories & miscellany: $15
Veterinary and medical: $122
Total monthly expenses: $247 / month

And broken down by percentage of overall budget:
