I put this one in slideshow format so you can scroll through and get a sense of just how Bowpi is so completely immobilized as the other two Basenjis, Foxy and Rozzie, come around to check her out.
Photos taken 12 May 2012
She only gets this tense when greeting other Basenjis. The boys tend to be nicer to her than the girls. Apparently, this is to be expected with the breed.

Was Foxy grumbling when she met Bowpi? Whenever we run into them at the park, that’s the first thing you hear, Foxy grumbling, and she goes and walks between her human’s legs!!! Too funny.

Yup, she does grumble! It doesn’t go any further though, and her owner is quick to intervene.
Bowpi has gotten jumped by other B’s enough times that it’s made an impression on her. Never anything serious, but it doesn’t take much to scare her. I would like to bring her to Basenji day, but I suspect she’s not going to find it as fun as I will… =)

Awww, I love Bowpi! I think Deedle would not be very nice to Bowpi. She has an attitude toward most dogs. She sends out these secret basenji evil vibes to freak out all the other dogs.

Interesting.
I think this is why I avoid shiba meet ups, I mean, if you know that within the breed a greeting can go horribly wrong – why set yourself up for that?!
At least it looks like Basenji’s keep it civil!

Actually, I suspect B’s can be just as sharp as Shibas. The few times Bowpi was jumped, it was a female leading one or two other B’s (whom the other female happened to live with) into the fray, and not really at a meetup — just a chance encounter at the park. Generally, Bowpi seems pretty good at keeping the tension under threshold with her VERY OBVIOUS appeasement gestures. I just feel bad for her that she’s so uncomfortable at the outset. Though there are a quite a few that she warms up to, after the initial introduction.
Bowdu, on the other hand, is more apt to stare too hard and make things worse when he meets his own kind — especially younger males. So I hardly go to Shiba meetups at all! *g* We only went to the last one because it was at the HUGE off-leash beach, and I’d walked Bowdu for about an hour from the opposite end of the park before we met up with the core group, which had mostly dispersed by then. I’ll probably bring them both to the Shiba picnic again, but there’s a reason we tend stay on the periphery… 😉
