While hanging out with some fellow grad students tonight, the conversation veered rather early on towards pets, and how several amongst us wish we had them. There are also several amongst us with children.
Studenthood and pet ownership is a topic close to my heart, as you can imagine — and something that I’ll surely expand upon another time. My long-term involvement in my East Asian-oriented field is perhaps the only time I’ve ever wished to blur the boundaries between children’s and animal rights, if only because it would ease so many aspects of international mobility.

I have to admit that international mobility is my one regret about our dogs. When we decided to get them we assumed a single international move from Japan to Australia, but as I’ve begun looking into options for my doctorate a third country is becoming attractive, with perhaps a fourth for a post-doc… not really manageable on a scholarship income and now with a child in tow as well.
