Tried a new hiking trail today.
There was SO MUCH horse poop. And I know what inevitably happens when there is horse poop…
Well, Bowdu approved of my choice, even if I felt like a bit of a sucker for bending my own rules for the sake of a new adventure. Oh, the map says the horse-free, hiker-only trail is just up ahead. Wait, where is it? Aren’t we there yet? And where is Bowdu? Oh, there he is… and what’s on his–AUUUGHHHHH.
Indeed, this is one of the hazards of off-leash walking and letting your dogs be… dogs.
What kind of surprised me is that even Bowpi was getting into the scent rolling this time. Normally she’s content just to sample a few dainty bites until I yell and scare her off.
This time, she wanted to go for some light makeup, too. The little bitch can still surprise me yet…
With two dogs to wash, I found it more efficient to stop by a self-service pet wash station rather than dirtying up the tub at home. Begone, manure — hello, mango! Pretty sure that wasn’t the perfume they had intended to bring home…

AAAAAUGH that is sooooooo NASTY!
I am glad that the horsecrap my dogs find is older and not as fresh and does not stick so easily to their fur. Sasha used to eat it like it was going out of style but is less inclined to do so now due to my huge annoyance (yelling loudly). The dogs have only rolled a few times in the stuff, which most of what does stick ends up on their harnesses, so it’s not that big of a deal when they do.
That is one of the major downsides to horse-friendly hiking trails. That and the horses themselves, since Juneau thinks they are food and Conker thinks they should be BAYED AT UNTIL THEY LEAVE! Those two do not make meeting horses on narrow trails easy.
Yeah unfortunately, Bowdu’s “leave it” fails completely when it comes to manure. So it’s best not to let him encounter any… My impulse here was just to yell and take pictures, since the damage was already done. It’s not HIS fault for following his instincts. It’s mine for bringing him to the poop-filled pasture to begin with. =P
I think many of the best hiking trails around here are, unfortunately, also horse trails, and I just don’t think I want to risk it for my dogs’ unpredictability around horses, my inability to read horses, and the poop factor. They’ve seen horses and cows from afar before, but only really encountered horses when off-leash just once. It could have ended badly, but it didn’t. A story for another post…
Oh no! I thought cat poop was bad…this is a buffet!

I am laughing at you. With you?
Silas thinks horse poop is delicious. Fortunately, I guess, the parks here tend to be segregated. If horses are allowed on trails, dogs are not. When Silas drops and rolls, I very rarely know or see why–I tell myself that it’s just to scratch.
Oh the elusive eau de poo…
Bowpi was probably going for a nice skin treatement
